For many students, staying focused in class can be tough. If your child has a hard time staying concentrated in the classroom, teach them these tips to stay alert and focused.

Help Your Child Focus in Class With These Tips

Whether your child is bored in class, distracted, or having a hard time staying awake, this can all lead to a lack of concentration. Luckily, there are many ways to solve this problem. Teach your child these tips to help them stay focused and learning in the classroom.

Get the Right Amount of Sleep

This may not be the first thing you think of when you hear your child can't concentrate in class, but the amount of sleep they get and the quality of their sleep can affect their concentration. If your child goes to bed late or doesn't get great sleep, they'll have a harder time staying alert or even awake in class. Even if they're interested in the lesson, they'll have a much harder time paying attention and following along. To resolve this issue, make sure your child has a bedtime that ensures they get the right amount of sleep. They should also put away their electronics early since the blue light from these can negatively affect the quality of their sleep.

Have a Healthy Breakfast

A healthy breakfast is also a must if you expect your child to pay attention in class and absorb the information they're learning. If your child doesn't have a healthy breakfast or breakfast at all, they'll run out of power quickly. This means they won't be alert in class, making it much harder for them to pay attention. To ensure your child is fueled up and ready for class, be sure they have enough time to eat a well-rounded breakfast every morning before heading out the door.

Participate in Class

When a student is bored in class or they don't enjoy the lesson, it can be extremely hard to just pay attention. If this is the issue your child is having, they may have an easier time staying focused if they take a more active role in the class. This can mean volunteering to read out loud, asking questions, or participating in a class discussion. Encourage your child to do any of these and see what works best when it comes to staying focused. Put Electronics Away

Electronics, like a cellphone, can be very distracting. You may notice your child being distracted by their phone or tablet when they're working on homework, so if they have their phone with them in class, it makes sense that this will be distracting. They don't have to leave their phone at home but be sure they have it put away in class. They should also mute their notification while in class because even if their phone is put away, the vibration from a notification will make them reach for their phone right away.

Stay Away from Distractions

There can be a number of distractions in a classroom no matter how hard a teacher tries to remove them. If your child knows that they will get distracted by the people around them, they can ask the teacher to sit them somewhere else. They can also ask to sit at the front of the classroom where they will be less likely to get distracted. If they get distracted when they're next to a window or by the door, then they should communicate this to the teacher as well. As they get rid of these distractions, staying focused will be much easier.

Take Class Notes

Finally, taking notes during a lesson can help your child stay focused. New pens, a new notebook, or even a couple of new highlighters will get them more excited to take notes. This may seem simple, but if they're excited to use their new materials, they'll have an easier time staying focused.
