Follow a routine this spring and summer to help your children stay in the educational mood while enjoying the warm weather and time out of school. Many children see the warmer weather and summer vacation as a time to escape from school. To avoid losing essential skills, such as reading, and possibly even improving on them, here are a few quick tips from our experts at The Tutoring Center. Make it a Group Activity
Find some short stories or even plays adapted for children, and make a theatrical performance of it. Take advantage of the nice weather and organize a group to meet at a park to act out your stories. Don’t make children memorize the lines; instead have multiple copies of the book/story/play so each child can read along as the others are acting. To make it even better, have adults join in on the fun; they can read different characters with different voices for a little extra comedy.
A Break from School DOES NOT Equal a Break from Learning
Simply because kids don’t have to attend school in the summer doesn’t mean education should be put on hold as well. Take advantage of free days by going to museums or other educational activities
; precede these activities by reading background information on the topic. If you are planning an excursion to the local aquarium, have your children read a book about the diversity of life in the sea. By combining reading with something your child is already excited about, it helps make reading exciting too.
Use the Weather as an Excuse to Read
Since reading for children is usually required by school, they don’t get to enjoy reading in a comfortable and enjoyable environment very often. Make an outdoor oasis to relax and crack open a book when the weather is exceptionally nice. Ask your children to join you for 30 minutes to 1 hour a day “to enjoy the nice weather”. Remarkably, the right environment can make all the difference.
We hope these few suggestions can help your family enjoy reading in the coming months. Remember, there are year round learning centers that specialize in reading tutors; you may also consider looking into summer academic programs to ensure your child loses nothing this summer.
