How to Encourage Your Child to Read This Summer
It's no secret that most children look forward to the summer because of the break they get from school. While it's ok to let your child sleep in once in a while, it's important that not all summer break be spent away from academic activities. To help your child practice their reading this summer, The Tutoring Center in Long Grove
has some useful tips.
Start a Family Book Club
A great way to get your child excited about reading this summer is by involving the whole family. By setting the right example and spending time reading yourself, your child will be more likely to pick up a book as well. Gather your family and designate a night for your family book club. Pick books that are at the appropriate reading level for your child and that interest everyone. Gather around once a week to discuss what you've read and to share opinions about the book of the week.
Sign up for a Reading Program
Most local libraries provide reading incentives over the summer months. One of these incentives is usually a summer reading program that involves prizes for reaching new levels. Take your child to the library and find out what they have going on for the summer. Even if they don't have a summer reading program, encourage your child to take a look at the books and other reading material available. Something will surely catch their eye and motivate them to read.
Host Movie Nights
Move nights may not sound like they have a lot to do with reading, but since many books have been turned into movies, it's easy to relate the two. To encourage your child to read a book, help them pick one that is also a movie. Once they complete the book, host a movie night in your home. Afterward, ask your child about the similarities and differences between the two and ask them to share their opinion.
